Olympic Pioneer - Public Art for London 2012

May 17, 2011

International Real Estate Developer EPGI has announced that it will donate a series of major sculptural art works to the Town of Ilford in London, UK in celebration of the new landmark residential towers Pioneer Point and the Olympics to be staged in neighboring Stratford. The plaza sculpture, sourced and coordinated by Global Design Strategies (GDSNY), and the feature LED lighting choreographed by GDSNY, will be the next work in a series of large scale public art installations by the GDSNY offices in New York and London.

A spokesperson for GDSNY in London described the upcoming installation of the art piece as follows:

Pioneers Gate is a monumental scale sculpture by prominent New York artist, Nils Folke Anderson, that complements the forward-thinking presence of Pioneer Point, and serves to integrate the public and private spheres of the site in the shared experience of a dynamic, original artwork.

Drawing upon Ilford’s tradition of technological innovation, and its vibrant present and future as an ethnically and economically diverse hub of growth, the sculpture consists of an elegant progression of nine linked rectangular frames which form a physical and metaphorical threshold. Each of the frames links through every other frame, evoking the cosmopolitan ideal of distinct people and ideas brought together within a lively urban fabric. As pedestrians and vehicles move around the sculpture the form appears to change dramatically, inviting a sense of interactivity and continuous evolution.

Pioneers Gate will be polished stainless steel. The finished sculpture will measure 24′ high and will sit on a concrete base finished with granite. The sculpture will be illuminated from the base at night.
